The Story Behind the Boyd’s Gifts & Engraving Mural

When you look at the mural on the front of Boyd’s Gifts & Engraving, you may see sunflowers, a yellow brick road, a bridge, a soldier, an American flag, military aircraft, and a dragonfly.

But to me, it is so much more than a mural.

Every piece tells a part of my story. Every image represents someone or something that helped shape Boyd’s Gifts & Engraving into what it is today.

🌻 The Sunflowers — My Mother

The mural begins with sunflowers, and they hold a very special place in my heart.

My mother loved sunflowers.

To me, the sunflower represents her warmth, her strength, and the love she poured into our family and our business. Sunflowers grow toward the light, and I think that is a beautiful representation of my mother and the foundation she helped create.

The sunflower also represents growth.

Just as a tiny seed can grow into something strong and beautiful, a small family business can grow into something that becomes part of a community.

🟡 The Yellow Brick Road — A Journey Toward Growth

The yellow brick road winding through the mural represents the journey.

It represents economic growth, opportunity, and moving forward. Just like the sunflower grows from a seed, our community has the ability to grow, change, and become something even better.

But the yellow brick road has another meaning for me.

It reminds me of the message from The Wizard of Oz:

There really is no place like home.

That road travels beneath the Spring Lake, North Carolina bridge, tying the mural directly to the community that has been home to my business.

For me, it represents the hope that Spring Lake continues to grow while never losing the sense of community that makes it home.

🇺🇸 The Soldier and American Flag — Supporting Our Troops

Then you see the saluting soldier and the American flag.

That part speaks for itself, but it is something I feel very strongly about.

We support our troops.

Military families and service members are an important part of our community and have always been an important part of Boyd’s Gifts & Engraving.

Being near Fort Bragg, military service is woven into the fabric of our community. The soldier standing proudly in the mural is a small tribute to the men and women who have raised their hands to serve our country.

It is our way of saying:

Thank you for your service. Thank you for your sacrifice. And thank you for protecting the freedoms we enjoy.

✈️ The Jets — My Stepfather and Where My Journey Began

Look up toward the sky and you'll see the jets flying high.

Those jets have a very personal meaning.

They represent my stepfather, who retired from the Air Force and played an important role in the beginning of my journey in the engraving business.

He was the person who helped introduce me to this world and helped set me on the path that eventually became Boyd’s Gifts & Engraving.

So when I look at those aircraft flying above the mural, I don't just see airplanes.

I see where my journey began.

I see the influence of someone who served his country and then helped pass something meaningful on to me.

🦋 The Dragonfly — Embracing Change

And finally, the mural ends with one of my favorite insects — the dragonfly.

The dragonfly represents change, transformation, and the beauty that can come from embracing a new chapter.

Life doesn't always stay the same.

Businesses change. Families change. Communities change. We change.

Sometimes those changes are difficult. Sometimes they take us places we never expected to go.

But the dragonfly reminds me that change can be beautiful.

That is why the mural ends with the words:

“Embrace the Beauty of Change.”

Those words aren't just about the mural.

They're about life.

They're about business.

They're about Spring Lake.

And they're about my own journey.

A Mural Made From Memories

When I look at the entire mural, I don't see separate pictures.

I see a story.

I see my mother in the sunflowers.

I see growth in the yellow brick road.

I see home in Spring Lake.

I see patriotism in the American flag and the soldier.

I see my stepfather and the beginning of my journey in the Air Force jets.

And I see the future in the dragonfly.

This mural represents where we came from, where we are today, and where we're going.

Boyd's Gifts & Engraving isn't simply a business to me. It is a continuation of family, memories, hard work, service, creativity, and the willingness to keep moving forward.

And just like that yellow brick road, our journey continues.

Because there truly is no place like home.

And sometimes, the most beautiful thing we can do is look at where we've been, appreciate the people who helped us get here, and then…

embrace the beauty of change.
